Our blog title to the contrary, there's more to Iowa than corn. Here's our collection of things to explore while you're in town; the links to the right should help you find something to do while you're visiting Des Moines.

What's happening: Pappajohn Sculpture Garden

Want to stretch your legs after dinner? Only a few blocks from the Marriott, a world-class collection of sculpture valued at $40 million is on display.

The Pappajohn Sculpture Garden spans two full city blocks -- from 13th to 15th -- between Grand Avenue and Locust Street. No admittance fee -- it's all out in the open!

Better bring that new digital talking book player, 'cause you can download an audio tour (in MP3) at http://www.desmoinesregister.com/assets/mp3/pappajohn/WalkingTour.mp3.

There's also a printable map, and more information about the park is available from the Des Moines Art Center and the Des Moines Register.

If you're still in town Thursday night, and baseball is not your cup of tea, you might want to hop in a cab and visit the Des Moines Art Center's main location at 4700 Grand Avenue. Open until 9:00 pm on Thursdays only, the Center focuses on contemporary art, and boasts works by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keefe, and Jasper Johns. All housed in buildings by I.M. Pei, Eliel Saarinen, and Richard Meyer. The Robyn O'Neil exhibit will still be in town; it features some incredible works done with very fine graphite layers on very big paper.  You can learn more about the exhibit at http://www.desmoinesartcenter.org/.  Admission is free, because, gosh darn it, Midwesterners are nice.
